Carmel, NY Drew Seminary Graduation 1884
EXERCISES AT THE DREW SEMINARY.

CARMEL, N. Y., June 19.—The eighteenth anniversary of the Drew Ladies’ Seminary here was celebrated yesterday afternoon in the large reception hall. Prayer was offered by the Rev. Mr. Benedict, of Croton Falls. Orations were then delivered by Madaline B. Oakley, on “Herosim”; by May Hooper, on “The Home of Bryant”; by Lilian G. Corse, on “Ideal Womanhood”; and Laura Gowdy, on “The Dream of a Botanist.” Miss Evelyn P. Everett played and sang. Ida Bell Everett, after speaking on “Superstitions,” delivered the valedictory address.
The Chamberlain prize for general excellence was won by Laura Gowdy. Diplomas were awarded by President George C. Smith upon the graduates, Jennie A. Smith and Ida Bell Everett. The latter also received the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Among the 400 visitors were County Judge William Wood, Judge John G. Miller, Assemblyman Harry Clapp and ex-Assemblyman Samuel H. Everett, of New York City.
